Eric Weber had been overweight for years. Now, at 62 years old, and after a successful gastric bypass surgery, Eric is thankful to his doctors for changing his life.

Since 1980, Eric had suffered from diabetes. Due to nerve damage caused by diabetes, he had to have part of his right foot amputated and thereafter used a wheelchair to get around. Eric also had a heart condition which led him to undergo a necessary double bypass heart surgery. Unfortunately, his high blood pressure and diabetes continued to be a health risk, so, at 317.5 pounds, he began to inquire about gastric bypass weight loss surgery.

“It got to the point where I couldn’t breathe”, Eric says. After he decided to have the surgery, he attended an informational meeting about gastric bypass surgery with Dr. Christopher Joyce. Eric says, “I decided that night for Dr. Joyce to do my surgery. I liked him, and I liked what he said.”

Weber had his gastric bypass surgery in 2004 with Dr. Christopher Joyce. He experienced very little pain and that his hospital stay lasted only four days.

In May 2006, he weighed 214 pounds, and he has lost more weight since. Eric now attends Silver Cross’ informational meetings every week talking to potential patients about how his life has changed. In fact, he even met his fiancé, Bonnie, through Silver Cross Hospital. Bonnie was at Eric’s first informational meeting six months after her own surgery. Having lost a great deal of weight herself, she also attends the meetings to speak to people who were interested in having surgery or had questions about it. Eric said that they talked at the meetings and became friends.

He regards his decision to have gastric bypass surgery as one of the best decisions he ever made. Following surgery, he has seen improvements in his blood pressure, heart, and diabetes. And, he now only takes four medications per day instead of 25. “I haven’t had to take insulin since the day after my surgery,” Eric says.
